How to Store Dates — Keep Your Premium Dates Fresh for Months

Premium dates deserve to be treated with care. Whether you have received a 500 g pack of Ajwa dates or a 1 kg selection of Sukary Rateb, knowing how to store them correctly ensures every date you eat is as delicious as the first.

Understanding Date Moisture Levels

Different date varieties have different moisture contents, which affects how they should be stored:

High-moisture varieties (Rateb, Sukary Rateb, Saghai) — these are softer, fresher dates that should be stored in the refrigerator and consumed relatively quickly.

Lower-moisture varieties (Ajwa, Safawi, Sukary Mftel) — these are more stable and can be kept at room temperature for shorter periods or refrigerated for longer shelf life.

The Best Storage Methods

1. Room Temperature (Short-Term)

Dates can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1–2 weeks, away from direct sunlight and heat. This is ideal if you plan to enjoy them soon.

2. Refrigerator (Medium-Term)

Store dates in an airtight container or sealed bag in the refrigerator at 4–8°C. This extends freshness for up to 3–6 months while preserving texture and flavour. This is our recommended method for most customers.

3. Freezer (Long-Term)

For extended storage of 6–12 months, dates freeze exceptionally well. Place them in a freezer-safe bag, remove as much air as possible, and freeze. Thaw at room temperature for 30–60 minutes before eating — they return very close to their original texture.

Signs That Dates Have Gone Off

Premium dates with no preservatives or additives have a natural shelf life. Watch for:

  • Visible mould (discard immediately)
  • An off, fermented smell
  • Overly hard, desiccated texture (the date has simply dried out — it may still be edible but quality will be reduced)

A small amount of crystallised sugar on the surface is entirely normal and not a sign of spoilage — it is simply the natural sugars rising to the surface. It can be wiped away or dissolved by briefly warming the dates.

Tips for Maintaining Quality

  • Keep them sealed — exposure to air is the main cause of date deterioration
  • Avoid humidity — excess moisture can encourage mould
  • Do not mix varieties — different moisture levels can affect adjacent dates if stored together for extended periods
  • Bring to room temperature before serving — cold dates are less aromatic; allowing them to warm slightly enhances flavour
